What might life look like if AI became far more capable than us? This short illustrated explainer follows one familiar town, with its workplace, school, café and clinic, and the people who live there, through five imagined futures.
Some of the futures are uncomfortable: power concentrated in one place, or highly capable systems pursuing goals that overlook human wellbeing. Others open up new possibilities for health, learning and discovery. Watching them play out in the same streets, through the eyes of a teacher, a health worker and a parent, makes the stakes concrete rather than abstract.
None of these futures is a forecast, and together they are not a complete list of what could happen. They are thought experiments: a way to look at the choices that lead in each direction while those choices are still open.
The bigger question is not only what AI can do. It is how we build and govern it so that people remain protected, have a voice and share in the benefits. It is the question we work from at XponixAI, whether we are building systems for the public sector, AI for education or AI agents for regulated enterprise: answers that cite their sources, and a human who makes the call.
What would you want AI to help us achieve, and what should it never take away?
